Joan Dominique: The Woman

AMERICAN- CANADIAN DESIGNER

Her name has become synonymous with prestige bridal, yet Joan Dominique began the company as a men’s shoe designer. She was studying at Parsons the New School for Design located in New York City and, throughout her education career, she chose to obtain as much industry experience as possible by working for Diane Von Furstenburg, Alice + Olivia, Kenneth Cole, and others. Educated in Women’s Couture during school and most of her real-world experience was in the footwear departments, led to her understanding of fashion industry.

Born in Paradise Valley, Arizona to an American mother and a Canadian father, Dominique grew up in the dry Sonoran desert with the backdrop of the iconic Camelback Mountain for a backyard. In second grade, her teacher asked her to create a report depicting famous icons, celebrities, and public figures who each student’s birthday; she shares her birthday with the designer Donna Karan, and this was her first exposure to understanding fashion design as a career. Once Dominique discovered it, she aimed to follow in Karan’s footsteps: attending Parsons, living in New York City for a little, and having a company of her own. And she did.
